When there's no mast at all
Your phone's satellite mode probably doesn't work where you're trekking
Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite covers 21 countries, mostly in Europe and North America. Direct-to-cell texting from T-Mobile, Rogers, One NZ and Telstra needs a plan with those carriers. For Patagonia, the Himalaya or Kilimanjaro, a dedicated messenger is still the answer.
Satellite vs eSIM, compared- Garmin inReach$7.99/mo (SOS only) to $49.99/mo, plus $39.99 activation
- ZOLEO$19.99/mo Prepare or $34.99/mo Protect, $19.99 activation
- iPhone 14 or laterFree for two years after activation, in 21 countries
- T-Mobile T-Satellite$10/mo add-on; also works roaming in Canada and New Zealand
